3rd Grade

Ms. Telesky's email: [email protected]

My name is Ms. Telesky and I am so excited to be your teacher this year! As 3rd graders, you will begin to learn new things you never thought possible! This year we will work together to build our classroom family, and create a safe space for everyone to learn together.

When we arrive at the school in the morning, we wait in the cafeteria and then we finally listen to our daily prayer led by our Principal, Brother Joseph Rocco.

Our classroom morning routine entails:

Unpacking and sitting in our seats to complete our morning work. We will then as a class discuss the date, the schedule for the day, and answer a morning meeting question of the day. Which is usually a fun little question about your favorite things to get your mind thinking in the morning! Then, we will go over the morning work together, and continue our day filled with fun and learning.

As we work very hard on academic growth, we also work on fostering community skills such as acceptance, respect, inclusion, independence, responsibility, self-love, and confidence.

Homework

A weekly homework schedule/list will be sent home at the beginning of each week. The assignments most likely will be the same for each week, but one or two assignments may change based on the schedule or needs of the curriculums. If there are ever any changes, I will be sure to put those on Class Dojo!

The weekly homework schedule will include daily spelling practices, math worksheets, reading/logging, and sometimes i-Ready practice

** Please check Class Dojo daily for any important events, information, homework add-ons, upcoming test/quiz dates, and to see what we’re learning in our 3rd grade classroom. :) **

The Challenge

Children will find this school year challenging with more responsibility on their part. They are more than ready to live up to the task. This is a big, important, and exciting “growing up” year.

Third grade involves learning various new skills which include: note taking, summarizing, study skills, and flexibility in the learning process. Students will be supported, positively praised, and motivated to put in their best effort and to work hard, daily.

They will of course struggle at times - with the necessary reassurance and aided knowledge and/or understanding that naturally, everyone is uniquely different, capable, and intelligent in their own way, and that we essentially learn, by making mistakes.

This healthy/positive mindset will hopefully inspire, support, and motivate the children in gaining confidence, acceptance, and pride in their many accomplishments.

Topics of Our Study This Year

Technology is integrated into all of our subjects. This allows for students to not only build on their technology skills, but to learn how to use it as a resource.

Lessons are tailored to meet individual students’ needs. Students will often use technology and manipulatives. Lessons are taught in many different ways, such as whole class, small group, independent, and one-on-one with the teacher. This allows for more direct instruction.

Math

Third Grade will use the HMH Into Math series. Math lessons will consist of whole class learning, small group work, independent work, and teacher one-on-one instruction. Students will work in flexible stations where they will practice using multiple strategies. They will have the opportunity to grow and work together. Students will also use chrome books and the smartboard to help reinforce lessons and provide more opportunities to practice their skills.

The following topics of study will be learned: Multiplication and Division Strategies, Fractions (the basics- equivalent fractions, simple addition and subtraction, and comparison), Area and Perimeter, Elapsed Time, Money, 2D Shapes, Measurement, Liquid Volume, Mass, Addition and Subtraction within 100 (mental math strategies), and Representing & Interpreting Data (graphs).

Writing

The three main pieces of writing that we will work on are: Narrative, Opinion, and Informative/Explanatory. Our writing topics are themed around holidays, seasons, and current events. Our writing is also tied to the current novel/text that we are reading. We will also use the Zaner-Bloser Handwriting series to help students practice their script.

Language Arts

Third Grade will use the Sadlier Grammar Workshop. We will build upon the following topics: Nouns, Verbs, Adjectives, Pronouns, Adverbs, Sentences, Capitalization, Punctuation, and Spelling. We will also use the Sadlier Phonics series to expand on our phonics skills.

Reading

Third Grade will have lessons using fiction texts, nonfiction, dramas, plays, fables, folktales, myths, and poetry. We will be reading the following Books: Charlotte’s Web, Because of Winn-Dixie, Stuart Little, and Third Grade Angels. With these books we will learn how to identify key points, summarize what we have read, and even answer comprehension questions to test our understanding. We will also use our Chromebooks to research and to complete assignments. We will also be reading various current events articles, and discussing the different parts of the article such as who it is about, where did it happen, what happened, and so on.

Science

Third Grade will be using Interactive Science in the classroom and Lab Learner in our Stem Lab! We will cover the following topics: Forces & Interactions, Weather and Climate, Ecosystems & Adaptations, and Life Cycles and Traits.

Social Studies

Third Grade will use the Harcourt Our Communities Series. We will cover the following topics: Geography, Landforms, The 50 States, Various Types of Communities, Government (the 3 Branches), Economics (money, imports, exports), and Citizenship. Students will have the opportunity to do a lot of projects.

Religion

Third Grade will use the Sadlier We Believe Series. We will cover the following topics: The Early Church, The Apostles’ Mission, The Church Year, The Four Marks of the Church, Apostles’ Creed, Different Kinds of Prayer, The Sacraments, Eternal Life, Our Role as Disciples, Continuing Jesus’ Work, The Saints, The Kingdom of God, and Religious Holidays. We attend Mass the First Friday of every month and on special days. Third grade also participates in scheduled Confessions.

Thank you for entrusting your child to us at our wonderful school, Immaculate Conception Catholic Academy. My hope and goal is for each and every one of my students to grow and to build on their courage/confidence to try new things, to establish and to foster a strong/positive mindset, and to develop a deep motivation and/or desire to become the absolute best version of themselves that they could possibly be.
