5th Grade Math

Students will focus on three key advancements from the previous grade:

  1. Fluency with addition and subtraction of fractions, and developing an understanding of multiplication and division of fractions.
  2. Integrating decimal fractions into the place value system and developing fluency with operations with whole numbers and decimals to hundredths.
  3. Developing an understanding of volume.

Topics covered in 5th grade math:

  • Place Value with Decimals, students will find similar patterns, places and values to the left and right of a digit.
  • Multiplication and Division of Whole Numbers, students build on their work in Grade 4 to establish fluency with up to four-digit by two-digit and three-digit by three-digit multiplication, as well as extend their understanding of division from one-digit divisors in Grade 4 to two-digit divisors in Grade 5.
  • Addition and Subtraction of Fractions and Decimals, students will add and subtract fractions looking for equivalent fractions and aligning the decimal points.
  • Multiplication and Division of Decimal Students will continue their understanding of place value when multiplying and dividing decimals
  • Multiplication and Division of Fractions, students develop an understanding of what multiplication and division mean in the context of fractions, and they apply that understanding to new cases of those operations.
  • Geometric Shapes and Volume, students explore two-dimensional shapes by classifying them in a hierarchy according to their properties. Students also explore three-dimensional shapes, filling rectangular prisms with unit cubes to find their volume. Then, they use their Grade 4 fluency with addition to find the area of composite three-dimensional shapes.
  • Patterns and the Coordinate Plane:  Students explore two numerical patterns and their relationship to one another. The coordinate plane helps to visualize those patterns, as well as other mathematical contexts.

This year, the math department will be using the Into Math program in line with the Next Generation Learning Standards, which are being implemented by New York State.

Students participate in TACHS and state test preparation classes. The i-Ready math program is also implemented. Students in grades 5 through 8 have one to one access to Chromebooks and a combination of online and hands on activities with manipulatives is used in class.

5th Grade ELA

The middle school ELA program is intended to prepare our students for next year’s New York State ELA exam, preparation for their 8th grade TACHS exam as well as high school English. To accomplish this, the students read novels, learn essay writing, and work on their comprehension and overall writing skills. Vocabulary and grammar are stressed through the use of SRA’s and the i-Ready program. Discussions and expansive philosophy are encouraged and a holistic approach to knowledge stressed. And as with all things and Immac, our Catholic faith serves as the springboard for all our efforts.
